The best interview tips to find the perfect candidate

As salons reopen, now is the perfect time to brush up on interview tips. After all, you’ll need them if you plan to take on new staff ahead of reopening. With our top five interview tips, you’ll be able to narrow down the perfect candidates in no time:

Break down the interview process

A top interview tip is to break down the process with multiple stages – a call, in-person chat, then practical interview. The phone call is a great way of gauging the candidate’s personality and what they know about the role. You can then bring them in for a ‘chat’ to ask more in-depth questions and test their skills. This will make the whole process more bite-size and much less intimidating.

Ask what they know about the business

Asking the right questions is such an important interview tip! During the phone stage, one of the leading questions should be ‘what do you know about the business?’ That way, you’ll find out how much time and interest they’ve put into finding out about you and your brand… as well as who is most interested in the role!

‘Tell me a bit about yourself’

This question may sound open, but this interview tip will let you know all about the candidate’s personality. Whether they say more about their personal or professional life, it’s more important to listen to how they convey their relationships with others. This, as well as finding out any common interests from this question, will give you a good indicator of how they will fit with the team.

Find out what motivates them

When it comes to the sit-down interview, or informal ‘chat’ to keep candidates at ease, it’s time to find out about what motivates them. Questions asking ‘What do you look to get out of this job?’ and ‘where do you see yourself in five years?’ will do wonders in revealing the candidate’s focus and long-term plans. This is important to show you their reliability and if they really do want the role.

Test their skills

The third interview stage should be a trade test, which will quickly help you identify someone with the skills you’re after. This practical interview tip could be anything from them providing a demonstration of their skills to a scenario with an upset client. Make sure the demo is suited to the role and environment so candidates can show you the right technical skills.
