Training new staff is an inevitability, whether you’re opening a new spa or going through staff turnover. But beyond providing essential knowledge on the products themselves, are you aware of all the methods to bring your staff up to speed? Here are five vital ideas to keep in mind when training your staff.
Decipher learning styles
Not everyone has the same type of personality, meaning their learning styles can vary and so will their suitability for different roles. It’s important to match these up so that your staff can get the most out of training. For example, a more social type of person may be more confident in a group dynamic for learning and is best suited with customer relations, whereas a more details-oriented person may prefer one-to-one learning, being better suited for budget management.
Practise makes perfect
Training the same treatments repeatedly will help locate any areas of improvement and build staff confidence. Make sure you have a dedicated area where you have the necessary equipment for practical training. Through practising the services several times over, you will be providing staff a routine that will act as a guideline should they need it. After all, practise makes perfect.
Create scenarios
Role-playing the daily running of your spa will help provide staff with a good idea of what they will be doing on a daily basis. Whilst scripts can also help provide a guideline for what to say and do, it’s best this is kept flexible so staff can provide a more natural approach. Make sure you also provide difficult scenarios, such as an upset client at the desk, to prepare them for any potential challenges.
Record sessions
Recording training sessions with your staff will give them the chance to watch themselves back, helping them analyse how they could improve. This will also provide the opportunity for you to review what they’re doing right and wrong outside of the initial session. This style of training is particularly useful when listening back to your staff’s product knowledge, making sure they know all the details.
Create a Personal Development Plan
Once trained, it’s important your staff have their own Personal Development Plan for future progression. This also ensures they have set goals to achieve to make them feel valued through further training. Keep in mind their training style and a potential incentive scheme for completing their goals.
