How to inspire and motivate staff in the new year

January can often bring in the blues, so it’s time to inspire your staff and get them motivated! The new year is the perfect time to refresh staff values and re-energise the salon before the busy period picks back up. Get inspired with these five solutions…

A problem shared…

…Is a problem halved, right? Scheduling in regular one-to-one time helps share any concerns you or your staff may have. That way, you can find out any problems that may impact their work and support them as best you can, building a relationship over time. These meetings also give you the perfect opportunity to let staff know when they’re doing a great job, making them feel valued.

Set targets

Quick wins are great for the short term, whilst ambitious targets inspire staff for the long-term. Everyone needs a goal to motivate them, so why not listen to your staff and set targets that benefit both them and the salon? Small targets will offer instant satisfaction, making them great for day-to-day objectives, but always make sure they contribute to their larger goal to show a clear progression.

Set up commission

Sometimes, staff will be motivated by money alone. An easy way to tackle that is by tying it to something that also benefits the salon. Setting up a commission structure on retail sales will not only motivate staff to promote your retail, but also means you shift more stock.

Provide industry knowledge

There’s nothing more demotivating than being in a dead-end with no new challenges. Give opportunities for staff to expand their knowledge through training or career progression within the salon. Failing that, industry magazines always provide the hottest info and trends that could spark inspiration, so make sure you have them accessible to staff and clients alike.

A comforting environment

You can inspire staff simply through their working environment! It’s not as crazy as you may think. Decent working stations and relaxing break areas go a long way in making your staff feel comfortable. This also comes down to providing the right tools and maintaining them, making your staff want to work at your salon.
