Now that the end of year festivities are over, some may find it difficult to maintain a positive mindset. Fret not – the dark mornings and quiet periods in the salon aren’t forever, and there’s plenty you can do to stave away those negative thoughts. So, we’ve put together five salon habits you can implement to make sure your team remains upbeat this side of winter!
1: Maintain a positive mindset with mindful breathing
A positive mindset is contagious, meaning staff and clients pick up on your mental mood and often match them. That means it’s important that your mental wellbeing is looked after and comes first, as it will then spread to others.
A great way to tackle the January blues in the salon, or if you’re ever feeling overwhelmed, is to take a few minutes for yourself. Practicing mindful breathing during this time is a wonderful way to focus on the here and now. Simply inhale slowly, pause, and exhale to focus on how your breathing impacts your body. Ten minutes of this helps reduce anxiety and stress, helping to maintain a positive mindset.
2: Focus on resolutions in the salon or spa
Think of how you can help resolve any problems that come up. The answers may not always be obvious, or easy, but they are there and won’t be found by wallowing in the negatives of the situation. Ask yourself what you can do to help the situation. If you can’t help directly, then think about who or what can. When an issue comes up, it’s best to focus on what caused the problem and solutions, making you a pro-active force to keep the happiness in the salon.
3: Speak with your team to maintain a positive mindset
We get asked how we are all the time, but very few ask how do we feel. We generally respond to the first by saying things are all right, even when they’re not, whilst the second is so rarely asked that it causes a genuine response.
Take some time to regularly speak with your team, whether it’s once every couple of weeks on a one-to-one basis, or for just 5 minutes every now and again. Listening to your team’s concerns helps them feel listened to and appreciated, and gives you a better idea if anything’s eating at them. We outline this and more in how to look out for your team, helping them to maintain a positive mindset.
4: Compliment other staff in the salon
When was the last time someone said you did a good job? Often, we let each other know when something goes wrong, not when something goes right. The thing is, constant negativity will lower the mood between you and the person giving that feedback. It’s perfectly fine to let someone know where they can improve, but it’s also just as important to let them know when they’ve done a great job! This will help lift their mood, maintain a positive mindset, and motivate your salon staff.
5: Promote water and healthy food for a positive mindset
Believe it or not, we should be drinking 6-8 glasses of water per day (or 1.2 litres), according to the UK Government and British Nutrition Foundation. So, why not make it easy for your team to grab a drink of water by providing water bottles or something similar? It’s also important to eat healthily to maintain a positive mindset, such as those outlined in our winter season solutions to keep you healthy. You could have fruit dotted around the salon to help with this, too!
