Interpersonal language
Your face will be the first thing clients focus on during your perfect consultation, so make sure you start with a smile! This then extends to you maintaining eye contact, which shows you’re paying attention. Body language is important for both you and your client too, so outside of standing up straight, make sure to watch for client responses to your suggestions such as a smile or a wince.
Listen to your client
To nail that perfect consultation, you’ll need to really listen to what the client’s after. Are they after a set style or colour, or are they open to suggestions? You could make a recommendation, sure, but make sure you do so after the client’s finished saying their piece. Once the client’s ready, repeat back what they’re after to make sure you’re both on the same page.
Carry out a medical questionnaire
If they haven’t already, your client should fill out a medical questionnaire. That way, you can find out any allergies or potential risks from carrying out their desired treatment. This can even be filled out online through the client portal, as shown in our how-to video. Beyond this, remember to carry out a patch test for colour treatments, or allergy tests every 12 months to make sure your clients are safe!
Explain what you are going to do
The perfect consultation needs perfect communication. Outline what you’re going to do and you will instantly reassure the client. If you also explain why, then the client is kept in the know before you set to work. For added peace of mind, you can do this before each step of the treatment to keep clients calm, throughout!
Keep a record for future consultations
Nothing builds rapport like being listened to and remembering, so make a note of the important details. Did they mention something personal they were happy to discuss, or a preferred product? Make a note of it so you can carry on where you left off or even upsell at a later time! That way, you can refer back to your notes and make sure any future visits start with the perfect consultation too.
