Time Management Tips to Increase Effectiveness

During the busy winter season, it’s imperative you perfect your time management skills. Increasing your time effectiveness only requires some informed guidance. Conveniently, we have just the advice to start you off in the right direction.

Plan to succeed

Time management starts with a plan. What is it you want to achieve for that day and how long will it roughly take you? Forming a quick plan before you start your day will save plenty of time in the long run, giving you a realistic idea of what can be achieved and what takes priority. Then, at the end of the day, you will be able to check what has been achieved and measure the actual time taken.

Revisit your rota

Evaluating where your time is being spent, and for how long, will help significantly with time management. This works by reviewing what you do day in and out and noting down how long each job takes to then evaluate what could be restructured. That way, you can automate many admin tasks, reprioritise with other staff members, or swap them with more pressing duties.

Focus on one task

While this may be easier said than done, tackling one task at a time increases your focus and therefore productivity on that job. As soon as you start darting between multiple tasks, you lose that focus and require more time to complete them. At the very least, it will likely help you feel less like you are being pulled in all directions.

Reduce meeting times

Shortening long meetings or reducing their number can hugely help with your time management. Whilst it’s easy to create meetings about planning busy periods, you will often find the panic planning will make you feel overwhelmed and create even more meetings to try and calm any tension. Create a plan for your priorities but don’t overdo it – sometimes it’s best to just get started.

Discuss with your team

Part of effective time management comes from evaluating your team’s time. Through looking at their own schedule and delegating tasks out equally or to those who have strengths areas will help everyone in the long run. Make sure the team are okay with any amendments, however – the more in control of the tasks they feel, the less stressed they will be.
