What to offer clients suffering from thinning hair

Thinning hair can be a tough subject to tackle with clients in the salon. It’s a sensitive topic that will mean change in their hair routine – something that will be in your hands. Before those hands gets to work, make sure you know how best to approach this sensitive subject with our top tips.

Breaking the news

Sometimes, you may be the first to notice thinning hair, even before your client. That’s when you’ll have to deal with the situation delicately! It’s best to focus on what positives the client can look into, such as trying a new hairstyle. Presenting it as an opportunity to try new styles and providing support with helpful products will go a long way in making the client feel looked after.

Longer consultations

Clients with thinning hair will likely feel less confident about their appearance. While this can be upsetting, spending longer on a more detailed consultation where you can share your knowledge of the subject area will help to comfort your client. Help them regain their confidence by discussing the new styles you and your team can provide to ensure they feel fabulous.

Styles to cover the area

What will give the client’s thinning hair more volume? It’s worth taking an extended look to see where the hair is thinning and what would be the most flattering length for them. For example, bob styles work well for those with fine hair as they make shorter hair appear thicker! Alternatively, offering intensive treatments like scalp exfoliation or masques to strengthen hair shafts can give a real boost.

Wigs and extensions

It’s no surprise that many clients still want their favourite hair styles despite their thinning hair. This may not always be possible, but help is on hand with the most unlikely hero – a wig! If styled right, wigs and hair extensions can make for great alternatives and cover up any significant hair loss.

Offer advice

Adding hair thinning advice and salon reading materials can really ease your clients’ concerns. Knowing the facts will make you appear not just professional, but compassionate as you’re helping your client. They’ll no doubt have plenty of questions, so why not give extra advice through leaflets or reading materials to prep them for their next visit?
