T Levels are new courses that follow GCSEs, designed to prepare students with hands-on business experience. One of these is a T Level in Hair, Beauty and Aesthetics, developed in collaboration with professionals such as Diane Hey, Beauty Apprenticeships Steering Group vice chair. We therefore delve into the details of what this course offers to help prepare you for potential students.
What is involved in a T Level for Hair, Beauty and Aesthetics?
A T Level, or ‘Technical Level’, is a two-year course designed to offer study at Level 3 (A level and apprenticeship equivalent). For Hair, Beauty and Aesthetics, this is then broken down into four sections:
1: A Technical Qualification, where they learn core skills and knowledge in the classroom
2: An industry placement with an employer
3: English, maths and digital foundations (if students need them)
4: Occupation-specific areas (a choice between Hairdressing, Beauty Therapy and Barbering).
As for the industry placement, that will mean at least 315 hours (or roughly 45 days) in your salon or spa, not too unlike an apprenticeship. It’s up to you how you offer your placement though, such as giving these as a block or as a day release. No matter what you decide, you will be in control of your students’ health and safety, working hours and pay.
What is a T Level worth?
A T Level is worth three A Levels. This is graded as a pass, merit or distinction, based on the classroom and occupational specialism (hairdressing, beauty therapy, etc). Importantly, the course in Hair, Beauty and Aesthetics will give students practical and transferable skills they need to go into full time employment.
When do these T Levels start?
The Hair, Beauty and Aesthetics T Level will start in September 2023. However, the scheme was launched in September 2020 and plenty more courses are being added year on year. Schools and colleges will then be able to provide the new courses across England, as shown by the Government’s growing list of providers.
These T Levels aim to make sure students are appropriately qualified to industry standards. We have additional ways to make sure they’re up to speed in your care too, with tips to help train your new students and staff on-site. Once your students graduate, why not train the entire team on how to use your software to make sure they can use it best for their roles? Training days are a great way to do this.
