Did you know that 60% of hairdressers and 65% of beauty professionals are chair renters? With those high numbers shared by the NHBF, chances are, you have someone renting a chair at your salon! We understand that maintaining the balance of power can be tough with freelancers, which is why we’re here to show you exactly how with our top tips.
Are chair renters worthwhile?
First thing’s first… is it worthwhile to have self-employed room or chair renters at your salon? There are pros – you won’t be in charge of their salaries, but there are also cons – they may keep different hours. The most important thing is making sure your salon is covered for any eventuality. Check out our blog for things to consider with whether or not the rent-a-chair model will work for you.
Provide an official contract
A Service Contract is an easy way of laying down clear-cut salon rules to your chair renters. It’s best to book out some time asap with those who are self-employed to go over any info. That way, you can outline any details such as chair rental costs, training rules and commission rates up-front.
Find out their unique selling point
You’ll want to work in tandem with your chair renters, so find out what their unique selling point and how it compliments your own. For example, do they offer bridal services where you don’t? If so, you can then attract clients to your salon without taking business away from your own staff.
Separate your branding
New clients could mistake a chair renter’s standards for the your own. It’s important to make it clear that they run a separate business in your salon, so that no one is stepping on one another’s toes. Social media is a great way to do this, making sure they have their own presence whilst you promote your own business, keeping branding separate and clients in the know.
Make them feel a part of the team
It’s not all about separation though – making them feel involved with the rest of the salon is also a big part of keeping a healthy relationship with chair renters. Just involving them in the discussions or team nights out can go a long way in maintaining a positive mindset when you get back to the salon! If they don’t want to, that’s also fine, just so long as you give them the choice to get involved.
